I have done quite a few cruises and each time tried a different cruise line, each of them different in their own way. I love cruising as a way of visiting different places and getting an idea of a destination.
As much as I love the sun (I even won an award for the best tan when I worked abroad) my favourite had to be last year when I cruised up Norway and into the Arctic circle, it was magical and came as a huge surprise to me, more so that I fell in love with Tromso and the whole scenery that I went back for a few days earlier this year
What can I say, everything was such a whole different experience from a sun and beach holiday. The scenery is stunning, the weather was pretty good too, I can honestly say I never thought I would be sunbathing on deck in the Artic, so for everyone that is dubious about the weather I can only say give it a try, you will have a holiday you will never forget. Go in the Summer and you experience the Midnight sun, go in Winter and you may be lucky enough to see the elusive Aurora Borealis, I have been lucky enough to see both. Something which my mother has passed on a small obsession about. Any questions about the Northern lights and I can pretty much tell you most things.....apart from am I guaranteed to see them?
Anyway back to the cruise, we flew to Copenhagen, sailed up into the Arctic and back down again. Standing at the top of the North Cape really does make you feel like you are on top of the world.
My second favourite port (and it's difficult to choose) would be Geiranger. It is one of the few ports where you sail right down a Fjord and is known and one of most beautiful fjords in the world, it is most definitely beautiful, especially if you take a tour to the top of Mount Dalsnibba, after driving round all these hairpin bends you finally reach the summit where you can see your cruise ship and it looks tiny, but the photos you can take are fantastic
But I would say the funniest part of the cruise, and there are actually two which I can't decide both of which consisted of the actual crossing of the Arctic circle.
One - that someone actually believed that there was a blue line in the sea so you knew you had crossed, I was told someone actually had gone out on deck at 6am with their camera to capture the exact crossing.
My other would be that every cruise line has a ceremony where you thank King Neptune for allowing you into his Kingdom. From what I believe every cruise line has a different way of celebrating the crossing, but Royal Caribbean certainly kept all us passengers entertained and there were giggles a plenty, especially when the captain was covered in flour and then egged! But...I won't say anymore, I would recommend you take a cruise to find out.
Anything you want to know give me shout
